Community Foundation of Mississauga Surpasses Million Dollar Mark

Mississauga, ON, May 21, 2010: The Community Foundation of Mississauga will announce the 2010 grants totaling $720,000 at their Annual General Meeting being held May 26, 2010 from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm at the Riverwood Conservancy in Mississauga. This will bring the cumulative grant making of this young community foundation to $1.6 million and represents welcome news for charities serving people in Mississauga.

Included are grants to organizations from a broad range of sectors including health, arts, heritage, the environment, children’s services, seniors, families and more.

Grant recipients include the uniquely named “Get Dirty and Live Green” initiative in Mississauga. This project is a collaborative effort of Evergreen, The University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) and the City of Mississauga. The grant of $25,000 from the Pendle Fund at the Community Foundation of Mississauga will make it possible to expand the project to a record 28 community engagement events in local green spaces including Erindale Park, Lisgar Green, Malton Greenway, Dellwood Park, Shelby Park and McKechnie Woods. People of all ages will be able to come out and participate in urban renewal, ecological conservation and environmental education. Mississauga residents will benefit today and well into the future from the stewardship of publicly accessible green spaces.

The Annual General Meeting also provides an opportunity to present the Annual Report, an essential accountability tool of Mississauga’s community foundation. The Key Note Speaker for the event is Janice Baker, CAO and City Manager for the City of Mississauga. Baker will be speaking on “Our Future Mississauga”, the vision for the future of Mississauga.

Other organizations receiving grants include Credit Valley Hospital Foundation, Dam Youth Drop-In, Ecosource Mississauga, ErinoakKids Foundation, Heart House Hospice, Interim Place, Mississauga Arts Council, Mississauga Heritage Foundation, the United Way of Peel and more.
